All About Me.. The Why, What and How of the cause I am pursuing

This is Fakiha Ali, a gender activist, pursuing M.Phil in Business Administration from Kinnaird College, Lahore. I am also an ELP-2015 fellow at Atlantic council, US and I have represented Pakistan at South Asian Youth Conference-2015.
I am presently working towards bringing a change in  transgender’s life and eventually aims to bring them in the main stream. I am spreading awareness through social media, meeting people, sharing their interviews with an aim to change the mindset of the masses and making transgender believe that they are a part of our society. I believe that they are integral part of our society and instead of ostracizing them we should make the way for them and enable them to empower themselves.
Being a Gender Activist, when I started working for transgender community, I was startled by the responses I got, in my family and in my society. I was sort of ridiculed for raising my voice for them. But with firm determination and my belief that change is possible, I kept on working for them. Initially when I started interacting, they seem to be too reserved to tell their stories, their sufferings but with time, they opened up and shared their sufferings. When I created a Facebook page for sharing their stories, I got good response and that boosted my confidence. Ever Since I have been meeting with them regularly, sharing their stories and raising their concerns on all available platforms. In the past few months I have attended various meetings in US and Sri Lanka as Young Leader of Pakistan and representative of Pakistan at South Asian Youth Conference and I have raised my concern for them.
Coming so far and actually being able to bring a change in their life has been more than satisfactory for me but I am aware that road to social change and granting them a status of normal human being will have many challenges and I am very much upbeat for this.
As a gender activist, when I started taking initiative, the first reaction of people around me was demotivating but when I showed some perseverance, their responses started changing. When I started sharing the stories through social media, I received support from various sections of society including transgender.
I built a network of like minded people and started discussing what can be done and how can we enable them to come into the main stream. I interacted with many NGOs already working in other branches of social development and studied their working style to make my own framework.
When I attended conferences in US as a part of Emerging Leaders of Pakistan Group at Atlantic Council of US, I got a platform to build more networks. I received a great response for my vision and that enabled me to make a framework for my future course of action.
When I attended South Asian Youth Conference in Sri Lanka as a representative of Pakistan, I met like minded and equally concerned South Asian youths who face problems similar to mine and who were in a better position to understand my point of view and gave me great inputs.
Having made networks all across the globe, and having collaborated with many groups, today I am able to present my ideas in a better manner and I am able to bring a change in Tran’s gender’s life through my small initiatives and I hope to continue the same and ultimately achieve my goal which is to give them equal status as of other genders and bring them into the mainstream.
As a Grad Student, when I used to held seminars, conferences and used to discuss various relevant topics, I started getting a sense of what is wrong in my society, what is being done and what needs to be done. Since then I started using various platforms be it live seminary, Radio or TV for sharing my vision for a better society to live for all.
We are living in an era where youth of my generation has seen drastic change in mode of communication at the blink of eye. Radio, Television and Computers have been replaced with Smart Phones and communication has become easy. Introduction of Social media in the form of Facebook, Twitter, Blogs made it much easier for all of us to spread our message across the globe at the click of a button. When I started my initiative as a gender activist I had the good fortune of having access of Facebook which enabled me to be the voice of voiceless.
Ever Since I got selected as ELP( Emerging Leaders of Pakistan) at Atlantic Council of US ( Nov-2015) and then a representative of Pakistan for South Asian Youth Conference in Sri lanka ( Dec-2015), I got to understand the use of sharing your vision with others and what is it about to receive great inputs from people from diverse backgrounds and societies.
When I interacted with people from various walks of life, I automatically formed network of like minded people who all have just one vision i.e a better society irrespective of the different type of societies we are living in. Every society has its rooted problems which needs to be addressed and evil needs to get eliminated.
As a youth of my country, I believe, that onus lies on me to make a change, to take the first step, to engage more people in good cause, to get inspired by whatever good being done and to be the inspiration of others and this zeal keeps me motivated.
I have the ambition to open an NGO for Transgender community where I could provide basic education and skill training to them and slowly and gradually make an effort to bring them into the main stream and provide them equal rights and status as of other citizens.

Leading Change 2016 ( Activity-3)

Activity-3

.    1.What does The Commonwealth mean to you?

Commonwealth for me defines actions/visions which are common and for the good of all. Actions which would benefit all, Rules which would unite all and Goals which would be common for all. Keeping the core values in mind, some basic actions should be implemented in all member nations in order to maintain peace, provide a development platform, to eradicate existing problems and to meet all future global challenges.

2. The Commonwealth Charter includes 16 core values and principles of The Commonwealth. Which of the Commonwealth values and principles do you hold as most important to you as a leader and why?

All the 16 core values and principles mentioned in Commonwealth Charter are of equal importance but as a leader and considering the work I’m doing at present, following two stands out for me:

Tolerance, Respect and Understanding

As a society we should give utmost importance to this principle. We should be tolerant enough, have respect for all and understand basic needs and problems of all sections of society in order to make everyone feel like being an integral part of society. Minorities, Outcast, Disadvantaged & Socially backward are some of the terms which we should get rid of in order to make our society/country/world a better place to live for all where all will have equal opportunities to excel and they would not be judged by their caste, creed, religion or color of their skin.

Gender Equality

As a growing society, we should provide greater emphasis on Gender Equality in order to tap everyone’s potential for the greater good of all. We are living in an era where on one side women are matching men in every walk of life and on the other hand girls are considered burden for family and killed even before birth. This harsh reality needs to be addressed.
When I talk about Gender Equality, I would also be an advocate of all other genders present on earth other than male and female and Transgender are one of them whom we call ‘The Third Gender’. All should have equal rights, equal opportunities and equal status in society Irrespective of their gender.

Leading Change 2016 ( Activity-2)

Activity-2
1. Take a large sheet of paper (as big as you can - you might want to put this on a wall) and draw a line across the bottom. At the right hand end write the word “future”, in the middle write “today ” and at the left hand end write “past”. Now try to plot the key moments in the development of your idea starting with the thing that began it all.

2. Imagine a newspaper or website from the future - five or ten years from now. They are writing a story about you. What does the headline say? What is the story about? Add it to your future timeline.

Leading Change 2016 ( Activity-1)

 STARTING HOMEWORK
 ACTIVITY-1
  1. Find three definitions of leadership from people you know or from famous leaders
(you might find these online). Share these and comment whether you agree with
    them or not and why.
1."The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." Ronald Reagan
I agree to the above statement as the first and foremost quality in any leader should be to identify the talent of his team and provide a working atmosphere in order to obtain maximum output. Leader is just a stimulus who stimulates others and let them do wonders with their talent. The all he needs is to channelize the talent and give others freedom to express their potential.
2."A leader...is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind." Nelson Mandela
I agree to the above statement as a leader should always be in a supporting role rather than commanding role. The best leader is one who guides well on the path and let others discover new avenues. At times leader has to lead by example but again that should just be to instil confidence in the team members. A leader should be so easily accessible that people feel free to come up with new ideas, to discuss their problems and they should have a confidence that their opinions won’t be discarded without proper rational. A leader should never be authoritative, rather he should be supportive like a Shepherd and if he manages to do that, team would always surprise him with excellent outcomes.
3."A leader is a dealer in hope." Napoleon
I agree to the above statement as a leader is never supposed to get bogged down if he comes across some challenges. He should be able to make others believe that there is always light at the end of tunnel and even when all spirits are low, he should be able to encourage and bring others back on track to confront the challenges and come out of it successfully. History has proven time and again that greatest leaders are always born out of adversity and when the society loses all hope, one person stands for them and shows them the path.

2. Share what your own definition of leadership is.
Leadership is an art of channelizing the energy of a group of people with diverse opinions to explore their potential in order to achieve a common goal. A good leadership has the capability to bring unimaginable outcomes. A good leader never imposes his opinion on others, instead he simply comes up with the idea, be open to ideas and leave no stone unturned in extending his support. A leader is not supposed to tell how to do things, instead he simply has to be clear about what to do and rest can be taken care by his team members given the co-ordeal working atmosphere which would bring best out of them. And if a leader is able to provide this, results are always surprising.
